Lissadell was also the inspirational retreat of William Butler Yeats. Since taking over they have restored the house and gardens to there former glory. Over 60 tombs have been located by archaeologists, the oldest pre-date Newgrange by some 700 years. Creevykeel: (Situated only 10mins drive away)Dating from the Neolithic Period, 4000-2500 BC, this site is one of the finest examples of a Court Cairn in Ireland.

Glencar Waterfall This enchanting waterfall was made famous by W.B. Yeats in his poem, 'The Stolen Child'. It is a romantic little 50ft waterfall nestled in amongst Glencar Lough and is well worth a visit as its breath taking!! Sligo Abbey - www.sligoabbey.ieKnown locally as the Abbey, this Dominican Friary was founded in the mid-13th century by Maurice FitzGerald. The site contains a great wealth of carvings including Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculpture, well preserved cloisters and the only sculptured 15th century high altar to survive in any Irish monastic church.
Yeats Memorial BuildingLocated between the top of O Connell St and Hyde Bridge this is one of the most picturesque buildings in Sligo. Built in 1898 by the Belfast Banking Co. the building was donated to the Yeats Society of Sligo in 1973 and is now home to a photographic and audiovisual centre on WB Yeats. Built in 1862 as a Model School, the present building was completely refurbished, extended and reopened to wide acclaim in 2000. One of the premiere arts centres in Ireland, the Model Arts and Niland Gallery has an extensive visual and performing arts programme.This extraordinary building is also home to the impressive Niland Art Collection, featuring works by John and Jack B. Yeats, Estella Solomons, Paul Henry and Louis Le Broquy among others.
County Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Society www.sligoroots.com This centre has a complete database of all Sligo's church records. The society also has a complete index of gravestone inscriptions for the county. There is a museum attached to the centre and a gallery containing many fine Jack B Yeats paintings in the same grounds. The objective of the society is to enable anyone with Sligo roots to trace their ancestors. The society provides a computerised genealogical service for all of County Sligo. If you are interested in tracing roots or completing a family tree here is well worth a visit.
Doorly ParkIn the 19th century Colonel W G Woodmartin of Cleveragh developed this wetland on his estate. A series of ponds were excavated and drier areas were planted with oak, scots pine and a number of other species of tree. The park is named after a late bishop of the dioceses Dr Edward Doorly. There is a nature trail through the park and a picnic area. The Wild Rose Waterbus departs from the pier at the entrance to Doorly Park.
Wild Rose Tours - www.roseofinnisfree.com - Leaving Doorly Park Jetty, take a leisurely cruise up the Garavogue River, past Hazelwood and across Lough Gill to the lovely 17th Century Parkes Castle where you can stop off to explore. While relaxing on board with refreshments and poetry by Yeats celebrating the lake and the Isle of Innisfree, enjoy the spectacular scenery from this wonderful vantage point and on your return journey along the northern side of the Lough passing by historic Church Island.
HazelwoodLocated just off the Dromahair Road (R286) 6km from Sligo, Hazelwood is a wooden sculpture & nature trail created by Irish and International sculptors, on the shores of Lough Gill. Once part of the Hazelwood Estate owned by the Wynnes.
